Tips to Alleviate Aches and Pain While Traveling

Taking a trip can be fun and exciting; however, if you suffer from chronic pain, traveling can exacerbate your symptoms. If this happens, it can ruin your whole trip. There are a few ways that you can alleviate your aches and pains while traveling. Our staff at Durham Chiropractic wants you to know some common tips to alleviate pain while traveling.

Traveling By Car

If you are taking a road trip, sitting for long periods of time can cause your back to ache and your pain to flare up. It is best to pull over every few hours and walk around for a bit. It is necessary that your stretch often during your trip. You should also watch your posture. It is best to sit up straight with your feet on the floor, using a small towel or cushion to help support your lower back.

Air Travel

When you arrive at the airport, you should use a trolley for your luggage. This will prevent you from straining your back. Most of the time at the airport is spent standing in line. When the line isn't moving, put your luggage on the ground. You should also sit as often as possible.

If you are going to sleep on the plane, you should use a neck pillow to keep your neck properly aligned--not leaning one way or another. This will prevent you from waking up with a strained neck when the plane lands. Finally, pay attention to your posture. Try to keep your back straight and your feet on the floor, lower back and neck supported, to avoid neck, back, and shoulder pain.

At Your Destination

When you arrive at your destination, there are a few tips to follow. It is best to have transportation from the airport to your hotel set up before you leave home. When you have transportation waiting, you won't need to wait in line for a taxi.

When booking your hotel, ask for a room that is close to the elevators. The less you need to walk, the better it will be for your pain.

When going sightseeing, drive to your destination whenever possible. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes that will put less pressure on your spine. When out exploring, be sure to take frequent breaks and sit down. Resting occasionally will keep your pain from flaring up.
