Chiropractic Care at Durham Chiropractic in Jackson
Chiropractic medicine is a system of care based on the theory that the alignment of the spine and other joints has an impact on overall health. A holistic system – meaning it has a whole-body focus – chiropractic has been in existence for about 120 years. At the Crockett County clinic of Durham Chiropractic in Jackson TN, our goal is to help your whole family be healthy through the use of chiropractic services and care.
The Theory of Chiropractic Care
The basic tenet of the chiropractic system is that the body's structure is designed to promote function. Any misalignment, especially in the spinal column, can put pressure on nerves and blood vessels, which can cause symptoms that at first glance would not seem to be related to the musculoskeletal system. For example, pressure on the nerves that supply the stomach can cause gastrointestinal distress. A misalignment in the upper thoracic area could cause a rapid pulse or high blood pressure. Other joints, such as the shoulder, wrist, knee and ankle, can also be out of alignment, causing acute or chronic pain. Once the spinal misalignment is corrected by a chiropractor, many of these symptoms go away.
When to See a Chiropractor
Pain, whether acute or chronic, is the most common reason people seek chiropractic care. Back pain is probably the issue for most adults, but the pain might also be in a joint such as the knee or ankle. Automobile accidents, sports injuries, falls and repetitive motion injuries can also cause musculoskeletal pain. Something as simple as poor posture can lead to muscle tension and spasm. Once you begin to alter your posture, gait or body mechanics to deal with the pain, alignment problems can develop that make the situation worse. In addition, many people don't eat a diet that promotes overall health and musculoskeletal function – chiropractors receive extensive training in nutrition and can make recommendations for dietary improvements.
The foundation of all chiropractic services is joint alignment, using manual manipulation or a hand-held tool called the Activator. Spinal decompression, a specialized form of traction, can help relieve the pressure on the spinal discs. Other modalities such as heat, cold, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation are used to promote musculoskeletal health and relieve pain. Massage therapy loosens tight muscles. Physical rehabilitation helps strengthen and stretch muscles to help you heal after an injury. Posture analysis and corrective exercises also promote overall health and function.
