Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Proper Workplace Ergonomics

You spend more time at your job than you do anywhere else but your home, which is why bad habits at work can have such a devastating effect on your health. Even sitting the wrong way can lead to problems which only get worse over time. At Durham Chiropractic Clinic, we help our clients deal with repetitive work injury and ergonomics so they can live more comfortably all the time.

What Is Workplace Ergonomics?

Combining the Greek words for work and natural laws, ergonomics refers to ways to make people more efficient in their environments, in this case, their work environments.

With the practice of workplace ergonomics, workers are exposed to fewer dangers. Repetitive movements and uncomfortable postures are recognized and dealt with or corrected. Unfortunately, when people aren't practicing good workplace ergonomics over time, they can become injured, sometimes permanently.

Preventing Injuries Caused by Poor Workplace Ergonomics

A chiropractor can help you both avoid future injuries and deal with discomfort you may already be suffering from. Here are five basic tips to get started:

  1. Watch your posture, and make sure you keep your spine stacked/aligned, and your hips, shoulders, and ears in line. This will help prevent back problems, especially lower back problems.
  2. Adjust Your Chair. Make sure you are at the right height and get a lumbar support if necessary.
  3. Adjust Your Monitor. You spend most of your time looking at a screen, so you need to make sure you aren't ever straining to see.  The focal point of your monitor should be eye level, so you're not looking down all day.
  4. Move Your Keyboard and Mouse if Necessary. Your arms should be comfortably at your side and your forearms parallel to the floor.
  5. Move Around. Get up and walk around the office at least every half hour.
